The HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer began production in 2004. It offered a low cost laser printer using 2550L toner cartridge that had a high output. HP has discontinued the production of this machine and it is no longer available for purchase new.
The printer is somewhat boxy and two tone gray in color. It is very light in weight and compact. The four HP ink and toner are arranged in a carousel that helps to save space over many other printers.
The low initial cost is the greatest advantage of this printer. Even when purchased new, it was one of the least expensive color laser printers for its day. To lower costs, HP designed the machine to be adjusted through the software rather than install an LCD screen in the printer.
This particular printer did bring about some complaints. First, the lack of a paper tray and second the cost and number of consumables that the machine required.
Unless you purchase the paper tray separately, paper is fed into this machine through a slot behind the front panel. This means that the panel must be left in the open position most of the time. Many owners of this printer do not like the configuration because it allows dust to get into the inner workings of the printer.
The Laser Jet 2550l uses a separate drum that needs to be replaced regularly. With this machine, it is not uncommon to have to replace the drum every five to six months. Cost of the replacement drum is about one third of the cost of the printer when new.
Consumers find that toner cartridges must often be replaced before empty. The printer employs a technique that uses print count to determine when a toner cartridge needs to be replaced. Thus, even when using the printer in the black print setting, the counter for the color cartridges counts down with every print made. Once the counter reaches the zero mark, the toner cartridge must be replaced for the printer to work. This has consumers replacing toner cartridges that may be over half full.
Prints on this machine also seem to be mediocre. Additionally, the speed seems very slow by the standards of today. The fastest speed, for black letter sized prints is 12.1 ppm. Color prints are only done a t 3.1 ppm. In addition, color often needs adjustment to get true color for the pictures. The machine does shine at black prints. It consistently produces clean and crisp text.
The HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer was a useful machine in bringing the laser printer to smaller businesses and homes. Technology for the laser printer has improved since the 2550l was introduced in 2004 and you will find that there are much better printers that are available for the same money today. It may be possible to find a used 2550l at a very reasonable price today, but you will need to keep in mind that the consumables may make this machine less than economical to operate. HP compatible toner can be purchased for this machine online or in stores. To get the best deal on toner, online is probably your best bet. Just make sure to get LaserJet 2550L compatible toner so it will fit your machine properly.
