A Review Of The HP Color LaserJet 5500n Printer And Its Features

The HP Color LaserJet 5500n printer is a durable color laser jet printer made for medium-to-large networked workgroups and special print tasks requiring color documents using 5500n printer toner. It does these tasks extremely well, and delivers a very nice print speed — especially for a color model — for an acceptable price that will bring to a business a nice machine that is sure to last for quite a while.

Hewlett-Packard has made this printer to be able to put out around 21 pages per minute of product in both black and white and color with HP Color LaserJet toner cartridges. This is a notable achievement, considering that color print jobs usually take a bit longer and many other models. Total print task time, from the second the job is selected, takes about 18 seconds. It can get going from cold start up in about two minutes, which is also very nice.

There is a 400 Hz processor installed in this printer, meaning that it will be able to handle even the largest of print tasks from multiple members in the workgroup with little trouble. With a 120,000 sheet per month printing capacity, it is also extremely durable printer and will need very little maintenance or upkeep, for the most part.

Print quality in both black-and-white and color is fine, coming in at 600 dpi. This means that any product that emerges will be clean, sharp and with no blurring or smudging. The 5500n printer also comes standard with two trays, with the ability to upscale to four trays, if needed. It can hold 600 sheets as is, with a total of 1600 sheets of capacity with all four trays in the mix, as well.

The printer is also able to hold 20 envelopes, though it does not have a standard feeder attached. Still, it’s very easy to feed in envelopes whenever needed. The 5500n is one of the basic models in this particular series, though it does have an internal print server for a 10/100 Ethernet input port. There is no duplex print capability, which is available in other models in the series.

There is a standard 96 MB of internal memory, which can be upgraded to 416 MB with little trouble. There is the capability to add a 10 GB hard disk, though this capability is more the province of the IT specialist keeping watch over this network printer rather than for any users, most of whom would have nowhere near the need for that much memory capacity.

The printer also works well with most Windows-based operating systems, including NT, as well as Mac OS versions. It isn’t a lightweight, weighing about 133 pounds, but it is a fine machine nonetheless. It will come with four separate print cartridges, including black, cyan, magenta and yellow. There is a fine one-year on-site warranty, which can be extended further for a nominal fee.

Taken in total, the HP Color LaserJet 5500n printer offers quite a few features, including very nice functionality and durability for a typical price of around $1300 before any discounts. Medium or large workgroups seem to benefit most from the use of this printer, which can handle about 21 pages per minute of output in both black and white and color.
