How are telephone lines physically connected around the world across oceans?

How can countries in Africa, Asia, Indonesia and America communicate on phone lines when there are oceans in between them? Not talking about Satellite because they are relatively new but what about land lines, home phone lines? Do they put telephone poles in the Ocean? How???confused

Satellites are not really that new, in fact Satellites were used decades ago to route International calls to certain destinations, but we generally do not use satellites for phone conversations anymore except for calls to extremely remote areas. Satellite phone communications are usually avoided today because bandwidth and phone service is very costly, and there is also a noticeable delay.

You are kind of right about the ‘telephone poles in the ocean’, except there are no poles. There are literally dozens and dozens of fiber optic cables that have been installed over thousands of miles across the ocean floor all over the world connecting all of the continents together.
