What kinds of surgical procedures are GPs allowed to carry out?

I hope you can help me out on this one! It’s for a health and social assignment I am doing…and I need to write about the treatment areas a GP provides, and surgical is one of them!

Thanking you in anticipation
Vera

Yes, it depends on her/his qualifications. If they have an FRCS, then they can do quite a bit, but not if they need GA. Mostly those than need only local anaesthetics. But most GPs don’t have surgical qualifications and do not ‘cut’ except for minor things,e.g. warts and boils.

    Golly! Is that OK?

    Removing moles and skin tags.
I had a mole removed from between my shoulder blades as it had changed from being rough to smooth. The doctor saw be after surgery hours had finished. He injected some local anaesthetic, cut the mole out and stitched it up. A nurse removed the stitches a week later.

Ring your local GP and ask. I know they can remove small cysts.

I think it depends on what qualifications they have, one of my doctors can removed tonsils, skin tags, moles and something to do with eyes (i can’t remember what)

    Hello,

(ANS) My father was a GP in Liverpool for 35years and I can tell you "for a fact" that GP’s don’t perform surgical procedures on their patients that’s NOT their skill or expertise.

The ONLY procedures they might on rare occasions carry out are things like:- a) removal of minor or tiny mole’s b) removal of a foreign object such as a thorn c) stitch up minor wounds with literally one or two stitches.

**My dad was skilled in home births (qualified in child birth) and back in the 1960 & 1970’s occasionally he might need to stitch the mother up if it was a particularly difficult birth. This is now done in hospital mostly these days though. GP’s don’t get involved in such things any more.

In the US, there is no legal restriction. A medical doctor may perform any medical procedure that’s within the scope of practice regardless of specialty including surgery. Hence you find GP’s doing dermatology or plastic surgery even though it’s not their specialty.
