You can get through J school if you’re a good student, but journalism these days requires the type of person who knows how to get attention. The media spends much more time on missing white women, drug celebrities, and political scandals than genocide in Sudan and other widespread, serious issues. Loud voices make it to the top and stifle everything else. Mass media, like any other conglomeration of businesses, is out there for $$$, and scandals sell.

But the world needs people who legitimately want to make it a better place, and journalism is a good way to do that. You can raise awarness for important things that need attention. Just don’t expect that path to be the most financially rewarding.

Regardless, do what you’re good at and what you enjoy. If you’re a good and clear speaker that people like to listen to, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try for television reporter, for example.

You can be a freelance journalist without any kind of degree of course, but if you want your stuff to be taken seriously you’ll need academic qualifications. And obviously, you will need those to find a job with ________. That means college.
It’s important to have a good vocabularly and be up-to-date on political processes and world affairs, or you’ll risk making a fool of yourself.

cons: it’s a dying profession, with the rise of the internet.
