Mobile Apps

How will the App store impact the future landscape of technology development and commerce? With the advent of the iPhone, Andriod, Blackberry and the move to mobile computing it is becoming clear the real power is within the mobile application marketplace. The Apple App store for example has become the dominant marketplace for mobile software innovation and is vying for more control with the newly arrived iPad platform. As the competitive landscape for apps heats up, what will the effect be on the marketplace? What will the future be for application development, standards, business strategy and investment? The panelists will share their experience and vision on what the future may hold and how it will impact current business models. Among the issues we will discuss: • Idiosyncrasies of the Apple vs. the Android App Store • Payment barriers of converting one system to another • Finding technical talent for each technology • What is the best revenue model for each platform? • Are there tools that will help port applications from one system to another? • What is the quality of apps with regard to service plans? • Why is one app more wildly successful than another? • What effect will the demise of unlimited data plans have on apps? Panel Moderator: – Richard Raysman, Partner, Holland & Kinght Panel Speakers: – Patrick McQuown, CEO of DOTGO – Paul Nolting, Senior Counsel, Verizon Wireless – Lukman Ramsey, CTO at Talk2Us

Intel To Come Out With Its App Store

A while ago Intel was in news for creating the fastest Operating System, the LINUX based Moblin, which booted in just 2 seconds allowing no room for sleep modes and hibernating modes. This time Intel is taking attention for something which is on its way for the users.

With everybody releasing their own Application store, Intel too is contemplating to join the club. Yes, you read it right. Intel is soon going to come out with its App store for netbooks. In last few years a lot of avenues had started their own App store. In fact service providers too have jumped into preparing their own Application store, Vodafone is one of those. Others in the list are – BlackBerry, Acer, Orange, Windows Mobile, Samsung (it initially started out only in UK, and later broadened its App store to the global market), Android, and Nokia.  But even if Intel is out with their App store, it is not going to have a big number of applications, not at least in near future. And definitely not like that of Apple App store which has around a billion applications that can be downloaded.

Take A Brief Look Into the Intel App Store:

Intel seems to be emulating Apple. Like Apple, Intel too would give 70% of the total revenue to the developers. And it App would be work with with Intel’s Moblin or Win 7.

fetch Intel more sales?~So, the question is will Intel, like Apple, have profit from its App store}?

To give a definite answer to this question would be misguiding. But yes, Intel’s target audiences are different from Apple’s. And netbooks are totally a different thing.  For iPhone market, App stores help in more sales. Also, with Google Chrome Operating System ready for public usage, a lot of applications would not really matter.
So now we will have Apps effect all over, apart from countless softwares.

Symbian’s App Store

Finally Symbian has its App store -Symbian Horizon. This was inevitable because most cell phone OS app stores are there in the market.

Here is what the Symbian team has to say about theitr App store:

“We recognize that developers face many challenges in bringing their products to market on Symbian devices,” admitted Symbian Foundation executive director Lee Williams. “In particular, the diversity of application stores in our ecosystem increases the burden on developers by requiring multiple submission and review processes. But this diversity can also offer an advantage over competitors’ closed systems, where applications sometimes receive arbitrary or commercially motivated rejections. Symbian Horizon retains this advantage while reducing the burden by becoming a conduit to multiple stores, helping developers reach the largest global mobile market in the world more efficiently.”

Well, I got to know about this on a blog; in a random search. Below are few extracts from the blog post with the Symbian news.

“Most cellphone manufacturers had already estimated the potential of a Symbian application store. So, there are application stores already in place like the Nokia Ovi Store, Samsung Application Store and Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena. Also, stores from China Mobile (Mobile Market) and AT&T (MediaMall) offer Symbian apps. The good thing is that all the offerings from Horizon will be integrated in these application stores”.

As per what is given in the blog, the Symbian App store will have around 50 applications. In the subsequent year, the number is to go higher.Even after 1000 application, Symbian is going to be far behind Apple App store (in terms of the number of applications Apple store offers). From the blog, “Symbian would still be lagging the Apple application store by some 100,000 applications. But the huge market share may really help Symbian to compete with the big Apple.”
