Look After Your Mobile Phone

We never think it will happen to us, and then it does. In my case, twice. I am, of course, talking about losing my mobile phone.

The first time I lost my mobile was clearly due to too many drinks on a boys night out. I’d been using my phone while on my homeward journey in a taxi and I must have left it on the back seat of the cab. The following morning, when I realized what had happened, I called the cab firm only to hear that my phone had not been found. It suddenly became very clear how much of my life was actually stored on that little device.

I vowed that I would be far more careful in future and get myself some mobile phone insurance to cover the cost of replacement. The expense was actually the last thing on my mind as I’d lost a whole load of important telephone numbers and contact details that weren’t stored anywhere else.

We all do it. When we run into an old friend or make a new contact we immediately enter their contact details into our mobile phones and often don’t even think about transfering those details to an address book.

The second time I lost my mobile phone was on another night out but this time I wasn’t the worse for drink. I am convinced that my phone was stolen by an expert pick-pocket who managed to remove my telephone from the pocket of my jeans without me noticing. The truth is that I probably dropped it on the floor when removing cash to pay for drinks at the bar. I told the nightclub staff but, not surprisingly, my phone never re-appeared.

Unfortunately I had not taken out the mobile phone insurance policy that I’d said I would. But, subsequent to my previous experience I had kept a record of all the new phone numbers and contact details that were on the device so the loss wasn’t quite as disastrous as it had been the previous time.

Is there a moral to this tale? Not really. But I strongly suggest that you backup all of your telephone contact details and maybe get yourself some insurance to cover the cost of a replacement.

7 Simple Steps to Look After Your Mobile Phone

Statistics tell us that around 88% or people don’t leave home these days without their mobile phones. Reliance on these incredibly popular and useful devices means that losing one can result in some serious headaches.

As mobile phones have become increasingly small and lightweight they’ve become easier to lose, drop or misplace. In 2008 around 200,000 mobile phones went into washing machines, around 600,000 were dropped down the loo and 55,000 were left in the back of taxis.

There is also the growing and worrying risk of theft. There are over 2 million mobile phones stolen in the UK every year. This means that 1 mobile phone is stolen around every 12 seconds and this worrying trend is on the increase.

If a mobile phone is lost there is the initial financial headache of replacement. There may be significant call charges amassed during the time between when a phone is stolen and when it eventually gets disabled. Then there is the impact of lost data, especially contacts.

It is estimated that fewer than 2 in 10 mobile phone users keep their phone SIM card data backed up to a separate device. Although most phones come with software that makes it easy to backup data from the phone to a computer few people take advantage of this.

So what steps can we take to help keep hold of our mobile phones?

  1. The first thing is to make it difficult for a thief to actually steal your mobile phone. Never ever leave your phone unattended in your car and always store it securely.
  2. Make certain you record the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of your phone. This is a unique number associated with every mobile phone that can be used to disable the phone if it has been lost or stolen.
  3. You can set your mobile phone to only operate after a configured PIN has been entered. This can be a bit of a nuisance but it will prevent a thief from running up substantial bills on your account.
  4. Another simple suggestion is to switch your phone to silent alert or vibrate mode when in busy public places so that no one is alerted if your phone rings.
  5. You may like to engrave your name and maybe your car registration details onto your phone and its battery. Alternatively you might like to use a system for attaching unique serial number stickers to your phone (as provided by trackitback.com) to your phone which will help identify your phone if it is lost or stolen.
  6. It is worthwhile getting into the habit of backing up your SIM card data frequently. As a general rule you should back up your phone data as often as possible which should be every day if you are updating your contacts or appointments every day.
  7. Finally, make certain that you have some mobile phone insurance that provides the protection that you need. Remember that not all mobile phone insurance policies are the same so be certain to read the details and ensure that you get the cover that you want.

By following these steps hopefully you and your phone will not become part of future lost or stolen mobile phone statistics.

Phone Insurance – Whats Essential?

When you buy mobile phone insurance you need to make sure that certain vital elements are included and covered. Here you can read the 3 essentials…

Mobile phone loss:

1.Lost phones add up to over 6 million every year…

Why more? Because many insurance policies do not cover loss, so often people with those policies commit insurance fraud by claiming the phone was stolen in order to get a new phone from their insurance company. Which means phone theft stats decrease artificially and mobile loss stats are lowered.

Mobile phone accidental damage is not covered by a number of insurance policies. There are some providers who do include it in their plans, but many don’t. So dont miss this one out.

If you drop your phone accidentally, and the screen is shattered, it is not covered by the manufacturers waranty. The warranty is what covers you for things just stopping working – not damage.

So you need to make sure that with your mobile phone insurance you are covered for accidental damage especially if you are one of the 1000’s of people who do not carry their phone around in a leather case to protect it. One tumble from your pocket or bag, down to the ground can be enough to shatter the LCD display screen.

You need protection from bounces like you get with a leather case. The leather cases have gone slightly out of fashion, in favour of slimmer rubberized cases. Ask at you local phone shop.

It will get kncked, hit, dropped etc – even if you have a leather case. It happens, its life. But you don’t need to have to pay for it when it happens. Accidental damage is something that you absolutely must and should have in your mobile phone insurance.

-> Water Damage

Water is a huge killer of phones.

Ove 1.2 MILLION phones are killed by water every year – whether down the toilet, in a beer, in a puddle, in a lake… The list of possibilities goes on and on.

And the crazy thing is that a lot of phone insurance policies do not cover water damage. Put water damage on your list of must-haves in your phone insurance list.

Phone Theft

1.3 MILLION mobile phones are stolen every year according to extensive research by Continental Research. According to Halifax research this figure is over 2 MILLION.

Phones are stolen every year at a cost of around £390 million

* One mobile phone stolen every 12 seconds

* Over 2 million mobile phones are stolen every year

So you need cover against:

  1. Loss
  2. Accidental damage – including water damage
