GPS Technology – What is a GPS System?

GPS became fully operational in 1995 and since it’s introduction Global Positioning Systems have become one of the most widely used aids to worldwide navigation, land surveying, tracking and cartography. At the core of transportation systems such as aviation, maritime and land navigation is a GPS system. GPS provides accurate timing and locality and has become an essential tool in many commercial and agricultural industries too.

Offering a wide variety of functionality GPS Systems are becoming more and more popular in the worldwide transport industry and penetrating into the domestic markets with hand held models and car sat nav systems growing in unit sales year on year.

The most common types of satellite navigation equipment are:-

  • Portable Satellite Navigation Systems for cars
  • Handheld GPS systems
  • Mobile phone GPS
  • Built – in Satellite Navigation Systems for cars

GPS Systems or Global Positioning Systems to give them their full name are one of the worlds most widely utilised communication, positioning and time reference technologies, expanding into homes, transportation, recreation and cellular phone arenas. Satellite technology is never far away from our everyday lives and it will become an increasing integrated part of our ongoing develoment.

By receiving coded reference points from a network of satellites circulating earth, GPS systems provide an exact location point on the globe.  Delivering a longitude and latitude reference detailing in degrees of minutes and seconds.

13°19'43" N is an example of a lattitude translated it reads 13 degress 19 minutes and 43 seconds North.  The following are gps system results for well known global reference points:-

  • Arctic Circle: 66° 33? 39? N
  • Tropic of Cancer: 23° 26? 21? N
  • Tropic of Capricorn: 23° 26? 21? S
  • Antarctic Circle: 66° 33? 39? S

Whether you are on foot, in a car, on a bike…At some point throughout your lifetime you will probably use a Satellite Navigation System.

Great Sat Navs

I was sitting in the car with my father the other day and I was holding the satellite navigation system in my hands, so that we knew where to go. It in reality occurred to me that we in all likelihood did incisively the same thing around 10 years ago, but how things were different. I was instead reading things from a paper map and there really was no postcode location, so we all ended up getting lost which wasted a huge amount of our time. Well, all this being said I came to start thinking about what the possibilities of the sat nav system will be in the future and this is what I have come up with.

Speeding

There are vast atrocious speed camera’s all around the land, but the thing is they are not hidden and people speed up to them and then slow down to go past them, by implementing a speeding device which automatically fines you when you have gone over the limit, it is for certain going to cut down speeding fines.

Self Driving

A sat nav system already knows where about it is, so the next step is the sat nav communicating with other nav savs and driving itself on the route. All the satellite piloting system would realistically have to do is transmit over the net to find what cars they are close to in their precise location and this would then make each automobile stay in a distance from each other. This would basically help stop things such as dangerous collisions.

Entertainment System

There will be no more need for separate CD’s radios or ICE. All this will be done from an integrated satellite navigation system, which will ultimately have all these functions on there itself.

When your old car has had it, why not look at buying or taking a look at used cars, there are so many different models of Audi or Nissan
