Massachusetts Broadband Expansion Begins

On July 26th 2011 there was a special broadband event held at the Sandisfield Fire Department in Sandisfield MA, where Gov. Patrick kicked off construction on one of the nation’s largest municipal broadband projects. The MassBroadband 123 network provide a fiber optic internet backbone throughout the region, and will create hundreds of construction jobs and spur economic growth for more than 120 communities in Massachusetts, including Berkshire County, which has never been fully served by broadband internet services to-date. The construction of the municipal fiber network for the Berkshires will begin in the town of Sandisfield. Governments Should Neither Subsidize nor Operate Broadband Networks to Compete with Commercial Ones

NCTA, the industry association of America’s cable companies, claims that the US Rural Utility Service mistakenly funded projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in areas that were already served by one or more broadband providers. RUS maintains the grants are defensible because existing broadband services in the areas were inadequate to support rural economic development. Meanwhile, the state of North Carolina is considering a bill that would restrict the ability of municipalities to use public funding to build broadband networks in markets that are already served by commercial providers; supporters of municipal networks maintain that existing broadband services are often inadequate in rural areas. ITIF hosts an Oxford-style debate on these controversies and, of course, elucidation on terms such as “served” and “unserved.”

Positioning the dish is actually very easy to do if you have two people. One will be in the house in front of the TV and the other will be outside positioning the dish. STEP 1 Turn on the TV after the Direct TV cable box is hooked up to the TV. Use the remote to access the set up channel. STEP 2 Click on the “Set Up” menu. Arrow down to the button that is called “Position” and click it. STEP 4 Write down the information you are given on this page. You will be given the “Elevation” number. You will move the dish to the approximate elevation using the markings on the side of the mounting bracket holding the Direct TV dish. The Azimuth is also displayed on this page. This is the compass direction that is based on zero. It will give you north, south, east and west degrees for your location. STEP 5 Close the page and return to the signal page. Have someone inside watching the signal as you take the Azimuth. Rotation and Elevation numbers outside to position the dish.
